Baby, it’s Cold Outside!
Welcome to Maddy Barone’s stop on the “Baby, It’s Cold!” bloghop.
Yeah, December of 2013 was darned cold here in North Dakota, with windchills dropping down to -59 F. It’s a bit warmer this weekend, but still darned cold! What you need is a cup of coffee, an afghan and a good book to curl up with, and I have one you. It’s a novella, so you can finish it in an evening, and it ends on New Year’s Day 2065. Best of all: It’s free!
When a plane from the year 2014 crashes in a dystopian future world where women are rare and required to marry, the female pilot is determined to protect the surviving passengers under her care. Does she have to do it alone, or can she accept the mate claim of the werewolf who wants her?
Connie Mondale, co-pilot of a plane that crashed in a future where women are rare, has no intention of being forced into marriage, thank you very much. A former fighter pilot, she’s accustomed to being in charge. But leading two dozen undisciplined women is harder than flying missions over Iraq and Afghanistan. Scarier, too, with woman-hungry men outnumbering them two hundred to one, and demanding marriage. When Des, the grim-faced werewolf who is always there for her, offers to share the load, how can she refuse?
Des Wolfe knows Connie is his mate. She refused his mate claim, so he tried to settle for being her friend. But when an opportunity comes to have her for his own, he grabs it with both hands, determined to have her love. If that means taking on a whole house full of women and making them his Pack, he’ll do it. There is no price too high for Des to pay to have Connie for his mate.

2014: I Haz Goals!
For me, 2012 was kinda a bad year. 2013 was kinda a good year. So 2014 is going to be a GREAT year! I have some plans and goals to share, and I hope making them public will help to keep me on track.
This is what I have lined up for 2014.
I’m starting of the year with a blog hop this coming weekend, January 3-5. There will be a ton of prizes to win like a Kindle Fire, gift cards, lots of free downloads, and more, so I hope you’ll come along. Find out more at http://justromance.me/
I will be one of 6 authors hosting a boardroom at Lori Foster’s Reader & Author Get Together in June. We have fun plans for “Build Your Own Hero”, a historical costume show, lots of prizes to give away and more.
My Tuesday Teaser will evolve into an ongoing story about Sand, one of the wolves who went with Quill to rescue Ellie, and Miss Amanda, one of Sky’s working ladies who is just about ready to quit the business and settle down. I’ll be picking that up the second Tuesday in January.
My goal is to finish the rough draft of Wolf’s Vengeance by the end of January, and have the polished draft submitted to Liquid Silver Books by March 1. Unless, that is, I change my mind again and decide to publish it myself.
Next up will be Wolf’s Princess at last. This will be the finale of the After the Crash series and I would love for it to come out at the end of October, 2014. That is when the plane took off, so it would be a nice way to tie it all together. Of course, that depends entirely on how long it takes me to write it, and Liquid Silver’s schedule. I would need to have it turned in to the publisher by mid July at the very latest. We’ll just have to see about that.
I’ve been invited to be part of a Paranormal Halloween Box Set with authors I admire and respect like Paige Tyler, Tigris Eden, Michele Villery, Opal Carew, Randi Alexander and others. I have a story in mind that has to do with Eddie’s feline ancestors, but depending on what my available time is, I might just do a bit of a re-write of Sherry’s Wolf and use that one. The story has to be turned in by August 1.
I also want to write a Christmas novella. It will be a New Adult inspirational contemporary love story with a humorous touch, no sex but plenty of romance between a Marine home on leave and a recent college graduate. I’ll self publish that one and hope to have it out in mid November.
I’ll take December off from writing (I never seem to do any writing then anyway) and then be charge for 2015.
Whew! That’s four books I plan for this year, plus the ongoing Tuesday Teaser. Can I do it? We’ll find out. Wish me well!
Happy New Year!
A Look Back at 2013
It’s the time of the year when we tend to review where we’ve been and what we’ve done over the past 12 months. Here’s my review:
I worked at the day job. Wrote in the evenings and weekends. Worked overtime at the day job. Wrote. Worked. Edited. Worked more overtime. Knitted. Worked.
Not too exciting, huh? LOL
Well, let’s be more specific. Here are the highlights of my year as a writer:
Three books published this year. Eddie’s Prize in February, Ellie’s Wolf in August, and Wolf’s Oath in October. The first two were published by Liquid Silver Books, and I put Wolf’s Oath out myself. I wanted to see if self-publishing would work for me. The jury is still out on that, and my plans for future self-publishing are on hold.
Three books released in audio format. I had Sleeping With the Wolf, Wolf’s Glory, and Wolf Tracker put out by Brick Shop Audio, and Eddie’s Prize will be released early in 2014. There is a certain thrill in hearing a professional voice actress reading words I wrote and bringing characters to life.
Wolf’s Oath Chosen for a Book of the Month. Yes, this past month, December 2013, the a GoodReads forum chose Wolf’s Oath for their Book of the Month discussion. That’s a big deal for me and I’ve enjoyed that group and the people in it.
The last couple months have been difficult for me, writing-wise. The day job has been uber stressful, with mandatory overtime and deadlines that we race to meet. I leave home at 6:30am and get home at 5:15pm, scramble to make supper before I have to go out to church, or an SCA meeting, or my knitting group, or my writers group. Those are all things I enjoy, but overtime has sucked the fun out of it. On those nights when I am home and can write, I’m so tired I don’t seem to be able to write. I sit at the computer and try, but words just don’t come.
That sounds terribly whiny. Sorry! I get that way when my creative outlet is shut down. I need to write for my sanity, and since I haven’t been writing… That is going to have to change in 2014. It will change in 2014! 😉 I am going to try to focus on positives, and improve what I can instead of whining about things I can’t change. One of the things I feel really good about is reader feedback. Several of you have let me know that you enjoy the books, asked questions that made me think about aspects of the After the Crash world, and have made suggestions for future stories and characters. Thank you so much!
My next post will be about my plans for the New Year. My goals may be crazy, but we’ll see how it goes.
Tuesday Teaser 12/17/13-Sand and Amanda Continued
I thought I would continue to tell Sand and Miss Amanda’s story. I had planned for them to be a secondary story in Wolf’s Princess, but now I’m not sure they will be. But I want to tell their story, so maybe I’ll just tell it in bits and pieces here in the Tuesday Teasers. I’m beginning half-way through last week’s post. Enjoy!
The door at the far end of the hall opened and Sand sat up straight as a scent came to him. There were a multitude of sickeningly sweet scents crowding his nose, but this one was clean and light. Deep inside, his wolf gave a mighty howl, pushing him to his feet. Sand was so shocked by his wolf that he almost didn’t notice the woman stepping out of the door. She had walked right up to him before he wrestled his wolf into a semblance of obedience.
‘Well, hello,” she said in a throaty purr, looking him up and down with obvious approval. “You’re the hall monitor for tonight?”
He nodded dumbly, taking in her luscious curves with awed eyes.
“You must be one of Sky’s relatives?”
He nodded again.
“I knew it. You’re all so buff and handsome. I’m Miss Amanda. You can call me Amanda.”
“Amanda,” he breathed, leaning a little closer to draw in a lungful of her scent. “I’m Sand.”
She almost knocked him off his feet when she ran the tip of one soft finger down his nose to tap his lower lip. “And you all have such fun names. You’re adorable! I would love to play with your hair sometime. In fact, on my next day off, I’ll give you a freebie.”
She turned to saunter back to her door. Sand’s gaze fixed on her lush, swinging hips. She paused and turned back.
“Oh, I almost forgot what I came out for. I was going to tell you that my first appointment tonight is Terry Askup. Last time he was here he was given a warning for being too rough. If it happens again, I’d like you to escort him out.”
Sand stared at her closed door with cold goo swimming in his guts. Miss Amanda was his mate. His mate was a business woman. In a few minutes she would be entertaining a man with a history of roughness, and she might ask him to escort her appointment out.
Escort him out? Hell, the man would be lucky to leave alive. The wolf inside snarled at the idea of any man making an appointment with Miss Amanda. Sand exerted all his will to force the wolf back. He was not entirely successful.
This was not good.
****
Amanda glanced at the clock and stretched out on her side on the bed, allowing her robe to show a hint of her filmy nightdress in a demure but subtly sensual pose she knew Terry would like. It was her job to know what her appointments would like and provide it to them. Terry preferred his women to be submissive and present a façade of innocence even while they drove him wild in bed. Submissive and innocent wasn’t Amanda’s thing, but she took pride in her reputation as a woman worth every penny of her fee, so for Terry she’d be submissive and innocent.
Footsteps paused outside her door. She adjusted the neck of her nightdress to show a hint of cleavage and looked at the door with wide eyes, trying for a surprised expression, as innocent as a schoolgirl and as provocative as Eve.
Surprise became real when Sand stepped in and slammed the door behind him. She jerked into a sitting position on the bed, thinking he was gorgeous. Out in the hall he had been cute, with that one imperfect tooth and tongue-tied stammer, but now, with his hip length black hair gleaming in the lamp light and black eyes fixed fiercely on her, he was a beautiful, deadly animal.
“Sand! What’s wrong? Where’s Terry?”
“Terry,” he snarled, his upper lip lifting. “He won’t be visiting you tonight. Or ever again.”
“What?” she began. “Why?”
Sand dragged her up off the bed and held her while he looked her over thoroughly. His gaze was hot enough to brand her. She couldn’t miss the bulge straining the front of his jeans, and an answering heat lit in her. That was strange. She didn’t usually become aroused so easily. But Sand was amazingly compelling. She stroked her fingers down his cheeks.
“Saturday is all yours, handsome,” she promised in a whisper.
“Tonight,” he corrected her hoarsely. “I’ve cancelled all your appointments for tonight.”
She wasn’t sure if she should laugh or scream. “Well, who said you could do that?”
“I did. Paint’s taking my place in the hall.” His face was very calm when he bent close to her, but hints of wildness showed in the set of that wide mouth. “Tell me to go, and I will. But tell me now, because you can’t change your mind later.”
He smelled so good. His body beneath the cotton shirt and jeans was lean and muscular. Most of her appointments were middle aged men with bodies made soft by an easy life of wealth. They were the only ones who could afford her price. Looking at the barely constrained strength in Sand’s body made her want to experience his lovemaking.
She placed her hands over the taut curve of his pectoral muscles and stroked down to his narrow waist where his belt buckle gleamed. “Take your clothes off, Sand.”
Name My Kitty Contest Results
I received 121 entries in my contest to name my new kitty. There were plenty of Snowballs, Snowflakes, a couple of Snows, 3 Yukis, 2 Crystals, a pair of Sinatras (blue eyes, you see), 3 Sophies and a Sofia, and many other wonderful names. I really liked the names that meant winter or snow in other languages. Some that stood out for me were:
Blizzard, Blanche, Bianca
Guenivere, Geneva, Gwyneira
Snow Angel, Angel, Angelica
Elurra, Neblina, Erehwon
Snow Queen, Artic Princess, Empress
Starfall, Winter, Ice Ice Baby
Indigo, Sapphire, Lily
Yukiko, Seto, Kabuki
Pearl, Petal, Penelope
It was really hard to narrow it down, but I finally settled on these 10 to select the name from:
Frigga – Jeffrey K
Luna Azzura-Martine D
Venitsa-Jane C
Eirlys-Quinn V
Snowbelle-Lily G
Miyuki-Betty B
Gwenllian-Linda M
Tansy (short for Tanzanite)-Gabriele P
Candida-Annette T
And the winner was Skyblu from Sally H!!
Congrats, Sally! I have emailed your gift card to you. Thank you everyone, for your wonderful names. I was completely overwhelmed!
And now for the kitty update. When I went to the shelter this afternoon to fill out the papers and get little Skyblu, it turns out there was a snafu. Someone else had put the little white kitty on hold before I did, so I couldn’t adopt her. That might sound like sad news, and I was pretty let down for a minute, but it meant I could adopt Dixie. Dixie and many, many other cats were found two years ago in a house where they had no love. On the TV show Hoarders it’s appalling to see how much stuff people just hang onto. Some people hoard cats. These helpless animals don’t get proper nutrition, or water, or litter boxes, affection, or veterinary care. At Dixie’s house the people bought jumbo bags of rice, slit the bags open and left them on the floor for the cats to eat. That’s all. Poor little Dixie (and she’s little. She’s three years old, and weighs less than 8 pounds. She’s petite!) has been at the shelter for almost 2 years. That’s a long time for a kitty to not be adopted. I once overheard some visitors say she was ugly. Maybe she’s not as pretty as the little white kitty, and she’s terribly timid, but I’ve loved her since I first saw her 20 months ago. Her markings are distinctive. She’s mostly white with random splashes of orange and dark gray.
She’s been Dixie for so long that I don’t think I’ll get used to calling her Skyblu. But at the Vet’s and on official papers she’ll be listed as Skyblu. If anyone asks me how she got that name, I’ll have a great story to tell!
Name My Kitty Contest!
I’m getting a new kitty! She’s very petite, with short white fur and gorgeous blue eyes. All I need now is a name. The shelter calls her Cienna, which is beautiful, but I want something else. Can you help? Whoever gives me the winning name will receive a $20.00 gift card to Amazon. How does this contest work?
Email me at MaddyContest@gmail.com with the name you think is best for this pretty little girl. Let me know which email addy you’d like the gift card emailed to if you win. Email me before Saturday night at 6pm central time. One entry per person.
I will go through the entries and choose the 10 I like best, then draw from those. The winner will receive a $20.00 gift card for Amazon.com on Saturday evening.
Thank you and Good Luck!!
Tuesday Teaser 12/10/13 Wolf’s Princess
This is a very tiny snip from one of the secondary stories from Wolf’s Princess. In Omaha, when a woman turns 18, she has three choices: marry, pay a tax to stay single, or go to work in one of the three whorehouses in town. Some women enjoy being “business women”, especially those who work in Sky’s House. He treats them like beloved sisters and any customer who tries to misbehave with them is shown no mercy by the Sky or the wolves who have come to work in the House.
One of those ladies is Miss Amanda, a full figured woman with long mahogany brown hair and flamboyant tattoos spiraling around one arm, over her shoulder to her breast. She’s worked for Sky for three years, and although she doesn’t mind the work and she loves the freedom it gives her, for the past few months she’s been thinking of settling down. She has enough money to pay the Single Status Tax for years to come, and more than enough to pay the Marriage Tax, but she doesn’t know exactly what she wants in a man. Sky would make a fine husband, but he’s taken.
Sand Wolfe came to Omaha as part of the escort Taye sent with Rose. He’s both fascinated and horrified by Omaha. He decides to hang a round for a few months, and Sky puts him to work as additional protection for his Pack of women.
Sand stared at Sky. “You want me to just stand out here in the hall and listen for a woman’s voice to say Cupcake?”
“Yes,” said Sky patiently. “That’s the word the ladies use when their appointment behaves in a way she doesn’t like. If you hear a woman say cupcake, go right into the room and be sure the man isn’t hurting the lady.”
Sand nodded crisply. “Do I kill him?”
“No! The lady will tell you whether the man should be escorted out or given a warning. OK? You can sit here. The appointments will begin arriving in about fifteen minutes. Your shift is three hours long. Paint will relieve you then.”
Sand watched Sky go down the stairs. He looked up and down the hall with its doors at regular intervals. There were four on one side and three on the other. At the top of the stairs was a small alcove with two delicate chairs on either side of a small table. He moved over to one of the chairs and carefully sat. What was he supposed to do for three hours?
The door at the far end of the hall opened and Sand sat up straight as a scent came to him. There were a multitude of sickeningly sweet scents crowding his nose, but this one was clean and light. Deep inside, his wolf gave a mighty howl. Sand was so shocked by his wolf that he almost didn’t notice the woman stepping out of the door. He nodded again.
“I knew it. You’re all so buff and handsome. I’m Miss Amanda. You can call me Amanda.”
“Amanda,” he breathed, leaning a little closer to draw in a lungful of her scent. “I’m Sand.”

Girls’ Weekend
My ten year old niece came to stay with me this weekend. I am single, with no children, so kids kind of freak me out. Still, we’re having a good time. We had pizza. baked chocolate chip cookies, and watched the movie Wreck It Ralph. The biggest hit so far was playing dress up with some of Auntie’s historical costumes. My niece is a free spirit who loves to ham it up for the camera. I wonder if she will be an actress or something in the public eye. She’s not shy! These were my favorites. Which do you like?
Tuesday Teaser 12/3/13-Sky
Wow! It’s already December? We’re getting a lot of snow the next few days, and then the temperatures are supposed to drop. Highs between -5 and -11, lows between -10 and -24. For Celsius folks, that’s between -20 and -31. A bit nippy even for North Dakota. I guess we’ll have a white Christmas at least! Here is a scene I wrote a while back, and it takes place a few months before Quill leaves Omaha to return to the den.
